hand over hand up the lifeline, luckily the knots stay tight

the clouds are a distant shore, waves, an island
streaking across the tan, warm night. no rain.
only you, and water by a rusted gate slumping in the grass.

we reach the lake- suddenly I am
                            shivering in the cool wind

you look warm and alive in your wool.

the lights were green and gold, we played Latin soul

knees in our arms, we talk.
as always, it is both expected and unexpected-

you

but you did.

on my first day back, my first day back in town

I'm not sure if this is right, but I never am. And just as these
things always are, I wish it didn't have to be this way.
