Susie Bright was one of the early editors, after being consulted by the women who came up with the idea, Debi Sundahl and Myrna Elana.

The current motto is "The Best of Lesbian Sex." Current editor is Tristan Taormino. On Our Backs ceased print publications in 2006, along with its sister magazine Girlfriends. Both were sold to Velvet Park Publishing, which gave former OOB/Girlfriends subscribers a one-year subscription to Velvet Park magazine.
