Something that attempts to appeal to a lowest common denominator of tastes, and in so doing irritates by its very blandness. If you aim to have everyone buy your records, you may decide to say things that everyone agrees with. So your message is going to be an uncontroversial tautology, for e.g. "we like to party".

This offends for a couple of reasons:

• If I wanted something so unchallenging, I'll go sleep. Entertainment fails if it is boring.
• It does not challenge you, it offers no beautifull insight. It will only reinforce the status quo. It does not question or show anything new, it tells you that you are right. It is a yes man
• It insults my intelligence.
• It is pandering to the mass market for money; not an artist communicating because they have anything to say.
