A gathering of jazz bands and musicians (mainly of the avant-garde variety), organized by Bill Dixon's nascent Jazz Composers' Guild, to sponsor their own series of concerts; NYC venues (e.g. The Five Spot, The Village Vanguard, et al) and the Newport Jazz Festival were loath to give more than token attention to them, as they weren't Big Name$, but they made some of the decade's most innovative music. They failed to stay together as One Big Union, but many DIY ventures began here. |
