Northfield is a small town of about 3,000 located in
Franklin County, Massachusetts. It was first settled in 1670 by a group of settlers from
Northampton, MA. The original two settlements failed because of frequent attacks by the natives, a tribe called the Squakheags, and the permanent settlement that became the Northfield of today was authorized in 1714. It's the only town in
Massachusetts that borders both
New Hampshire and
Vermont and the only town to be split by the
Connecticut River. The town's largest
industry is
agriculture and the largest employer is
Northfield Mount Hermon School.
