Northern Three-toed Woodpecker

(Picoides scalaris) An uncommon woodpecker that lives in Northern North America. I once saw this bird at Waldo Lake, in the Oregon High Cascades. 8-9 1/2", black head with yellow cap and white facial stripes, black and white ladder-back, white underparts, remaining areas black. Lives in conifers. Nests can be identified by the incredible squalling the young make when the adult taps on the tree.
