A chunk of lithosphere on the west coast of South America, identified by plate tectonics. The Nazca plate pushes against the lighter South American plate and subducts beneath it. This causes the rise of the Andes mountain range, also causing the volcanic elements. (This kind of mountain range is called cordillera.) It is also in contact with the Cocos Plate to the north.
