Mum's the word

Mum's the word is a phrase meaning Remain silent. Say nothing.

The phrase was used in William Shakespeare's Henry VI, Part 2:

"Seal up your lips and give no words but mum"
So "Mum" as used here is not the colloquialism for Mother. but rather a humming sound made by an unopened mouth.
