Mullah

(person) by e2reneta Thu Aug 19 2004 at 22:07:49

1. In Sunni Islam, a scholar or cleric specializing in interpreting religious law.

2. As a title, used to indicate respect for a Muslim man.

The term "mullah" has a slightly different connotation in the West, ever since the Iranian Revolution. The term is used to refer to theocrats in fundamentalist regimes, and implies that the cleric holds an anti-Western or anti-modern stance.
