| Maple sugar candy is made from essentially the same stuff as maple syrup; that is to say, boiled sap from a particular variety of maple tree. Weird.
Anyway, Vermont is famous for its sugar maple trees, and as such the only maple sugar candy I've ever had comes from there. There are essentially two varieties of maple sugar candy - blended and pure. The blended is made from a mixture of maple and cane sugar, whereas the pure kind is (you guessed it) straight maple sugar, with no other ingredients. I'm serious, no preservatives or anything. Pretty cool.
Many people find this sort of candy very cloying; they liken it to drinking maple syrup right out of the bottle. I fail to see how that's a bad thing. |
