In the battle between John Muir and the Sierra Club against the City of San Francisco and its Mayor, James D. Phelan, this phrase, attributed to City Engineer Michael M. O'Shaugnessy, sums up many people's perspective on Nature preservationists:

"The only people opposed to damming the Hetch Hetchy are long-haired men and short-haired women."
