Young, John Russell, an American journalist; born in Dowington, Pa., Nov. 20, 1841. At the outbreak of the Civil War, war correspondent; joined the editorial staff of the New York "Tribune"; established the "Morning Post" in Philadelphia; the "Standard" in New York; was European correspondent of the New York "Herald," as correspondent of the same paper he accompanied General Grant in his journey round the world; was appointed minister to China; was appointed Librarian of Congress, June 30, 1897. He died in Washington, D.C., Jan. 17, 1899.
