Name came from a Paul Kantner/Grace Slick solo LP, when the Jefferson Airplane was self-destructing; they kept it upon becoming a full-time band. Despite the upgrade in hardware, it was the sound of a crashed Airplane - their old "change the world" bravura devolved into generic Cali "Me Decade" mellow rock, a soundtrack for hippies who'd become the mortgage-paying dolts they once rebelled against. In the 80's, all Jefferson vestiges were purged; they became the corporate rock Starship.
