Internet Inter-ORB Protocol, an object oriented protocol that allows programs to share object space no matter how or where the programs are running. Closely related to CORBA.

Standard port for IIOP requests is 1570. I believe the powers that be - perhaps Sun - are trying to get this accepted as a standard much like port 80 is for HTTP.
