In epistemology, a theory of knowledge or justification that holds that whether a subject knows, or is justified in holding, a certain proposition is determined by that subject's internal states alone .

Externalism, on the other hand, holds that whether a subject knows, or is justified in believing, a certain proposition can be determined by states that are external to the subject. Reliabilism is one of the most popular versions of externalism.
