Many cynical people feel there is so much wrong with the world that if you are intelligent enough to be aware of all this stuff you would have to be cynical too.
That leads them to assume that if someone isn't cynical, its because they aren't intelligent enough to realize how fucked up everything is.
It is silly, if you ask me (someone who consideres herself intelligent and aware of alot of crap but not necessarily as cynical as some). But I do see where that school of thinking comes from.
What they may not realize is that it sometimes just takes one thing or event to happen in someone's life that changes their whole attitude from cynical to optimistic.

I apologize for my gratuitous referencing of the mysterious 'they' in this node.
