I Am the Clay is the only novel by
Chaim Potok that doesn't focus on
Jewish characters or
Jewish life. As the
communist Chinese Army advance across the
Korea during the
war, a
peasant woman discovers a young boy unconscious in a ditch beside the road. Her husand is angry and jealous that his wife insists on protecting the boy, but when the boy does not die they become convinced that he has
magical powers.
