Holly Valance is another Australian soap star turned singer (see Kylie Minogue and Delta Goodrem). Her website describes her music as "infectious 80's influenced electro-pop" that "commands you to the dancefloor". To be honest i'm not a big fan of her music, electro-pop just isn't my thing. Personally i think she is famous because of her body, not because of her voice. She does have a very good body.
Holly was born in 1983, the daughter of Serbo-Croatian jazz musician, Ryko and English music lover, Rachel. When Holly was 4 her parents separated and she spent her childhood with her half-brothers and sisters in Melbourne, Australia.
When Holly was 12 she was recognised for her fine looks and european constitution and was scouted by a modelling agency (her parents were also both models when they were younger). After working as a child model for 3 years she sucessfully auditioned for the part of Felicity 'Flick' Scully in the hit soap Neighbours (the same soap that brought Kylie and Delta such success). Initially Holly didn't want the part but, like many child stars, her parents forced her into famedom. Nevertheless she succeeded and between 1999 and 2002 'Flick' became a hit character on the show and was loved by millions.
When she decided to leave the show in 2002 she understandably wanted to cash in on her character's fame and establish herself as quickly as possible; Warner Music were happy to oblige and her debut single 'Kiss Kiss' was released that Spring.
Holly Valance is notorious for her raunchy music videos, posters, calenders etc. Her casting in Neighbours was fortunate in that it let her gain notoriety without being constrained by people's expectations of how she should act. Kylie Minogue was not so lucky, her character in the show was a goody-goody innocent girl and people loved her fot it. When she left the show in the '80s she tryed to make music videos (post 'I Should Be So Lucky') that were a little more stimulating. Unfortunately people couldn't relate her to the character they knew and rejected Kylie (incidentally her videos seem quite tame compared to the efforts of Miss Valance). Thankfully Miss Minogue has managed to re-establish herself in the '90s and proven that she has more staying power than your average pop star. I wonder if we'll be able to say the same thing about Holly Valance in ten years or so.
