The Nation held a contest (first announced in the February 19, 2001 issue) to select an equivalent title, moniker or (dis)honorific for George W. Bush. Initial candidates included:

• pResident
• Resident (suggested by Earth Island Journal's editor and revised style sheet)
• His Illegitimacy
• Old 5-4 (Hayes also was known as "Old 8-7" referring to the margin by which a special commission foisted him on the populace.)

In the May 21, 2001 issue, the winners (determined by reader votes) were announced. In order, they were:

1. Governor Bush
2. Spurious George
3. President*
4. President Select
5. Boy George

Also-rans included His Illegititude, President pro curiam and pResident.
