Hendrik Antoon Lorentz, Dutch physicist, b. 1853, d. 1928. Studied at the University of Leyden where he received his Ph. D. in 1875. He served as the Chair of Theoretical Physics there as well. His research areas included optics and electricity. In 1904, he published work on the Lorentz transformation, which helped dispel the notion of "ether" and helped pave the way for Einstein's Theory of relativity. Awarded the Nobel Prize in 1902 with Pieter Zeeman
