Harriet Tubman

(person) by Jet-Poop (57.5 min) (print)   ?   (I like it!) 1 C! Sat Nov 13 1999 at 14:25:44

American freedom fighter (1820(?)-1913). Born a slave in Maryland, she escaped and joined the Underground Railroad as a conductor for runaway slaves. She was the Railroad's most successful conductor, making 19 trips to the Deep South and bringing over 300 slaves to freedom. She was never captured and never allowed anyone to turn back. Southerners assumed she was male and placed an astounding $40,000 bounty on her. She helped plan John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry, but was laid up sick during the raid and missed all the action (and missed getting arrested and hanged, too). Tubman was also a popular abolitionist speaker, and she worked as a spy for the North during the Civil War.

Little-known fact: she suffered from narcolepsy.

Research from GURPS Who's Who, compiled by Phil Masters, "Harriet Tubman" by Andy Vetromile, pp. 106-107.
