The Guardian First Book Award was established in 1999 as a replacement for the previous Guardian Fiction Prize. Organised by The Guardian newespaper it is intended "to reward the finest new literary talent with a £10,000 prize for an author's first book". The award is run in conjunction with the Waterstone chain of book stores as judging is carried out both by a "celebrity panel" and by members of reading groups run by Waterstone.
