A word meaning technical jargon, especially in legal matters.
It was fist used by the British dramatist Sir Richard Steele is his play The conscious lovers (1723). He used it as the name of a fictitious estate that was the subject of a legal discussion. It is not recorded who first used it to mean legal mumbo-jumbo.
