A term typically used in the Software Industry to describe what happens when the software has been succesfully pushed through QA, and is ready for consumer or target audience release.

This, I believe, has something to do with the fact that the original master CD's were gold on one side, from which the mass produced CD's were made. Even with CDRW's pretty much standard now, it's use is very widespread.
