A Scottish term for a hunting guide or a young attendant.
Also ghillie brogue or brogan; a type of low shoe used in formal Scottish attire, with decorative lacing over an open instep, derived from the traditional highlander shoe used in hard weather. The original brogue was really a piece of deer or cow hide with the hair turned out, gathered and strapped around the foot.
An interesting detail of the original brogue is that it was not meant to keep the feet dry. In fact, a number of holes were cut in the shoe to let the water out. I guess that says something about the kind of terrain the highlanders had to negotiate.
Anyway, that is said to be the origin of the decorative outer layer with punched holes of modern brogues.
