The world "genki" has the connotation of "healthy" - hence the standard greeting "Genki desu ka?" - literally, "are you healthy"? The two kanji mean "beginning" or "origin" and "energy" or "spirit".

Hence, "genki" can mean either simply "I'm fine" or "I'm bouncy as hell and I'm not going to sit still anymore." It's all in the context.
