The south-western part of
France, also known as
Aquitania.
In his De bello Gallico, Julius Caesar mentioned it as a separate part of France;
presumably, it was still Basque speaking at the time.
In medieval times, it was under English rule for over a hundred years.
As so often happens, regional and political differences also surfaced in religion when the
Cathar movement flourished here.
