| There is french toast and there is french toast. And after you've tasted French Toast Royale, you will know the difference.
Ingredients
You most definitely need white bread, and not russian bread or something of the sort. Obviously the better quality bread, the better the french toast will be, but just regular white bread is fine. Just don't get any whole wheat bread or pumpernickel bread or the suchlike.
Preparation
Cut the bread into normal size slices.
Pour the sherry into a bowl and dip the bread in it. Make sure the bread is thoroughly soaked. Don't be surprised at the amount of sherry the bread is able to hold. Leave the bread there and move to the eggs. Beat the eggs and scrape in the entire lemon peel. Mix the sugar and the cinnamon in another bowl.
Pour oil into a frying pan. When it is hot enough, dip the bread into the egg-lemon mixture and place on the pan. Note: do not leave the bread in the eggs, as it will crumble, seeing as it is already soaked.
Fry the bread until it is golden brown on both sides (yes, you'll have to flip it over once).
Serve with a generous portion of creme fraiche (or sour cream if you don't have creme fraiche), and sprinkle lots of cinnamony sugar on top.
It is truly unbelievable what a difference there is from regular, vanilla, or just about any other french toast. |
