1901-58, Ernest Orlando American physicist
Born in Canton, South Dakota. He was a professor at the University of California at Berkeley and director of its radiation laboratory, now known as the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. For his invention and development of the cyclotron (see Particle Accelerator) and his studies of atomic structure and transmutation, he received the 1939 Nobel Prize in Physics. Laid the scientific foundation in Nuclear Physics for the Atomic Bomb.
