Druk Air first took off in 1983 flying scheduled services to Calcutta and Dhaka from Paro, the only airport in the mountainous country situated in a deep valley 7,300 feet above sea level. Originally they used a 16 seater German built Dornier 228-200, suitable for landing on Paro's short runway, but upgraded to two British Aerospace BAe 146-100 aircraft as traffic built up. Their network has further expanded to include Delhi, Kathmandu, Bangkok and Yangon. Druk Air also offers an hour long joyride for passengers wishing to see the towering heights of the Eastern Himalayas from the air.
As the Bhutan government is not in a hurry to attract mass tourism (restricting sightseeers to prepaid packages costing $200 a day upwards), it is doubtful the airline will see much further expansion.

Livery : Blue and white fuselage, with a red and yellow stripe streamlining the sides. Tail is white with the flag of Bhutan.
