Dot-matrix Display

A type of score display used on most pinball machines from the 1990s onward, replacing the alphanumeric display. This display consists of a single grid of LEDs, in at least three different sizes on different games but usually in a size similar to the space occupied by 4 score displays on earlier games.

This type of display could show all four players' scores simultaneously, or the current player's score filling the whole display, or the current player's score small plus various text, or just text, small pictures, and video modes. Sega pinballs used a larger display size with room for 6 players' scores, and thus they allowed 6-player games.
