Champagne was invented by a blind celibate monk named Dom Perignon. He was the cellar master at the Hautvillers abbey near Reims, in the district of Champagne, France. He wanted to stop the carbonation in fermenting wine, but instead he invented Champagne, also known as sparkling wine, in 1640 AD.

Today, champagne made in the old way is rare and expensive. You can buy Dom Perignon champagne, named after the old master, for a lot of money. Most folks buy the sparkling wines made using la methode champenoise, or in the Champagne method, because it's cheaper.
