In some
universities, each
college has an
office for administrative functions. This is called the
Dean's office, for no apparent reason. These offices are usually natural habitats for
red tape and
surly secretaries, so good luck if you actually go there expecting assistance. Instead, you will be greeted by
bureaucrats who seem quite alarmed that there are actual
students on their precious
campus. Getting help from these people is like extracting
gold from an
orange. No one will know who is supposed to be in charge of the area of your problem, but instead of telling you this, they'll refer you to some other random
bureaucrat, or make something up. This will happen repeatedly until you either
give up or stumble into the right office, by which point you'll be fortunate to recall
your name, let alone your question. I'm fairly certain that this is one of the
circles of Hell that
Dante left out, because it was too
frightening.
