Also known as North Sámi. The most common of the languages of the Sámi people. It belongs to the Finno-Ugric language family, and is closely related to Finnish and Estonian. The language has special status in Norway, and (I believe) in other Nordic countries as well.

Sámi computing currently suffers from a lack of standardization. The special characters needed for Davvi Sámi can be found in the ISO 10646 (Unicode), in the ISO 8859-10, in a character set developed especially for the Apple Macintosh, and in one or two separate, private standards, whose names I can't remember.

Support for Sámi word processing is actually so poor that some government agencies have to send letters that are spelt incorrectly due to their computer equipment lacking proper support for the Davvi Sámi character set.
