Damning with faint praise is a way of silencing something you don't want to hear about by apathetic acceptance of it.
For example:
Violently rejecting a statement causes people to be interested. People like to rebel, and people like to see what the fuss is about.
Ignoring it only causes people to complain, or possibly start coverup theories.
Heartily promoting it will only bring it to other's attention, plus it will give the impression you really approve of it.
So what do you do? Just a two-line review in some obscure journal. Just a short blurb. Give them the "I could care less, if I actually cared enough to bother to do so" routine. You have them damned with faint praise. |
