Crystal Quest is one of
the classic
Macintosh games (mostly for the
sound effects in my opinion). It was first released in 1988 as the very first color Macintosh game, an enhanced version of
Crystal Raider.. It was also converted to the
Apple IIgs in 1989 by "Burger" Bill Heineman. Both versions were released by
Casady and Greene.
Crystal Quest is one of those action/puzzle games that gets a cult following over the years, much like Tetris but in the Mac world. Your avatar in this world is a round ship with a gun. You control your ship with the mouse; moving the mouse changes the velocity of your ship (and shots) and clicking the mouse fires your weapon. Your mission is to collect all the crystals in your current level, then escape through the exit which will then open. You will be accosted by a variety of nasties. Some of them ignore you, some of them head toward you, and some of them spit eyeballs at you. One touch will destroy your ship, whether it's from an enemy, the enemy generators on either side of the screen, one of the several mines that litter each level, or even the exit passageway that leads to safety.
There was eventually a Critter Editor released for the game, as well as the sequel Crystal Crazy. Crystal Quest was ported to PalmOS and Pocket PC by Infinite Ventures. In 2006, the game was released on XBOX Live Arcade for the Microsoft Xbox 360, with an easy (wtf) version at HD resolution, and also in the original version.*
