A trumpeter from Delaware who bridged the bebop-era virtuosity of Fats Navarro and the later era of Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard. Co-led a top mid-50s quintet with Max Roach, combining great originals with inventive reworking of pop'n'bop standards; at fast tempi, Brown and Roach were unimpeachable. His solos were often as thematic/motivic as his Brown/Roach bandmate Sonny Rollins. His 1956 car-crash death was a big loss for jazz - he was only 26 years old, still learning.
