I first read the name
Christine Chubbock in a list of
quotes . In fact, most of what I know of her is still this quote:
And now, in keeping with Channel 40's policy of always bringing you the latest in blood and guts, in living color, you're about to see another first -- an attempted suicide.
Chubbock (or according to some sites, Chubbuck) was an anchorperson in "Suncoast Digest", a morning show on WXLT-TV in Florida. After uttering these words she pulled a gun from a bag that was lying behind her and shot herself in the head. She died the following day.
I never understood what caused people to do such things. A good friend of mine committed suicide a few years ago, and when I was in officer's course one of my team-mates shot himself in the head. I just can't get it.
Searching the web for an explanation to Chubbock's behavior led to no insights regarding her suicide, but some interesting observations about the web. What I learned was that different sites claimed she died either on July 24th, July 15th, or July 25th at 9:38 am. The quote was repeated many times, but never with an explanation of her actions. I guess either no one knows, or, more likely, no one cares.
