A
baseball owner (of the
Kansas City/
Oakland A's) of the
60s/70s; with
Bill Veeck, one of the most colorful, fan-friendly owners in
sport. "Charlie O" was his
nickname, and the name of the
mule he bought as a team
mascot; he bribed players into growing
moustaches; he stuck Jim Hunter with the name "Catfish"; he started the
70s pastel-uniform trend. With
free agency,
mom-and-pops like him and Veeck could not survive: he tried to sell off his star players, but
MLB thwarted him.
