The Canadian Securities Course, often abbreviated to CSC, is a course offered by CSI (the Canadian Securities Institute) covering the basics of the Canadian capital markets, different kinds of securities, and investment, tax, and portfolio planning and strategies. While some interest investors take the course, the vast majority of students take it because it is required by law to be registered as an investment advisor, or RR (registered representative), with the appropriate provincial securities regulator. The course involves two (long and thorough) assignments and one three-hour exam. The course materials are three textbooks covering 12 chapters, and a workbook. No classroom instruction is involved, although the CSI offers seminars for a hefty fee.
