If you could be reasonably in tune, keep 4/4 time, and have a British accent (Aussie, Kiwi, Canadian, or South African would do - few Yanks could tell the difference), you were destined for the at least the lower reaches of the Top 40 charts. "Long" hair a plus. Some cool stuff (mainly one-hit wonderstuff) came from the "lesser" bands: the Dave Clark Five, The Searchers, The Tremeloes, amongst many others. Not to be confused with the MTV-era Second British Invasion.

May I just say: The Beatles started the British Invasion.

Bands like The Yardbirds, The Searchers, Lonnie Donegan,Marianne Faithfull, Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames, The Fourmost (who were also from Liverpool, lived on Ringo Starr's street, actually...), The Spencer Davis Group, Dusty Springfield, Frankie Vaughan, Procol Harum, Herman's Hermits, The Kinks, Manfred Mann, The Moody Blues, Hollies, Troggs, Merseybeats, The Dave Clark Five, The Animals, The Who, and Cream, among many, were the people that followed in the steps of The Beatles.

The Beatles opened the door for a few established British Bands like The Who, the Yardbirds (which evolved into Led Zeppelin), The Rolling Stones, and the just as good, but not listened to as frequently Moody Blues, The Kinks, The Animals, and Cream, but lots of the others were just trying to cash in on the mop-topped 'yeh-yeh-yeh'in', pop-singing, good-looking quartet.

And no, there hasn't been one like this since. People talk about the "second" and "third" British Invasion, but we never went away, fools!
