Bobby is a main character in the 1983 Marvel Productions Ltd., D&D Enterprises and TSR nonlinear animated series, Dungeons & Dragons. Bobby is voice acted by Teddy Field.
Bobby is the youngest of six children transported through an amusement park ride into an alternate world called the Realm. Upon arrival a strange gnome called Dungeon Master turns them into a number of Dungeons and Dragons character classes. Bobby is turned into a "barbarian," and given a magical club as a weapon. The club is the group's most powerful offensive weapon, tearing open the earth and ripping mountains to pieces.
Sheila's brother, Bobby's primary concern seems to be to not be perceived as the smallest, weakest member of the group. In Quest of the Skeleton Warrior he must face this fear when he is turned into a helpless infant unable to even lift his club. Bobby shares Hank's Aryan features, and ranks after Diana in having the fewest clothes - double-band leather armor, fur boots and a metal helmet; none of which seems to offer much protection against attack.
Upon entry into the Realm, Bobby finds and rescues a baby unicorn, Uni. This creature becomes his pet and best friend, and he always runs to its aid long before thinking of the rest of the group. Bobby's relationship with Uni is tested in Valley of the Unicorns, where Uni is given the choice between staying with members of its own kind and continuing on with the group. Predictably, the unicorn decides to stay with them. Uni helps Bobby by replacing him as the object to be protected, though to make doubly certain he makes sure to charge into battle ahead of all the others every time there is an opportunity.
In Night of No Tommorrow Bobby is twice almost killed by Tiamat the hydra for his blind bravery. In Servant of Evil the group is kidnapped by lizard men on Bobby's birthday, leaving only him free. Bobby gets to infiltrate Venger's fortress and rescue them by himself and in the process learns that being the hero isn't always so easy.
Bobby spends a considerable amount of time arguing with Eric, who he feels is belittling him due to his age. They even come to blows in Venger's Maze of Darkness in the episode The Girl Who Dreamed Tommorrow, so virulent is their hatred for one another. Bobby yearns for home almost as much as Eric does, and in The Dragon's Graveyard he breaks down in tears after Venger destroys yet another portal home.
Bobby makes few friends his own age in the Realm. One friend he does make is Terri, a girl who can see the future, in the episode The Girl who Dreamed Tommorrow. It is through Terri that we learn that Bobby is the only character who will definately make it home, when she dreams of seeing him in the real world returning her medalion to her. |
