A barn door is a an accessory which goes on the front of a theatre lighting instrument which has two big doors, a la barns, plus two little doors. It is used on instruments such as fresnels to block light spill from hitting undesireable areas. It aslo serves a purpose of blocking dreaded light spill.

Back to theatre lighting terminology.

Also known as a Scotch Mount, a 'Barn Door' is used by practitioners of astrophotography to keep a camera synchronised with the movement of the night sky and prevent those pesky star trails.

A good list of links to guides to barn door and other type of camera mount construction can be found here:

A common expression in the South, when an old-timer notices that you forgot to zip your trousers, is:

"Your barn door's open there, sonny."

The implication, of course, is that your horses might get out.

It's often whispered out of earshot of any ladies who might be present.
