Pen name of Charles Farrar Browne (1834-1867), one of the 19th century's greatest humorists and an influence on Mark Twain, and H.L. Mencken among others. In addition to his writing he also lectured and was considered one of the first ever stand up comedians. His delivery at these lectures was said to be very droll. Twain references him briefly through the Hank Morgan character in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.
