Tenor saxophonist from Cleveland; perhaps the father of all "soundual" improvisors and noise-ists. Wrote themes straight out of old-timey Baptist hymnals, played with the wide vibrato of a church saxophone; his solos were the polar opposite: explorations of the sound-making possibilities of his sax, abstract, intense - he and his groups (especially prior to the late 60's) could sound like the critters on Noah's Ark at feeding time. His corpse was found in the East River, 1970.
