According to legend, Ajari Joan was a Buddhist priest who lived upon a high mountain.
He met and fell in love with a young girl - a sin for Buddhist priests. For this transgression, he was transformed into an okuma, and in his rage, he destroyed his own temple.

He later recovered his sanity & sat down to pray. He died where he knelt, keeping on praying even after his death.
