Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, a 4-6-4 is a locomotive with four leading wheels, six driving wheels and four trailing wheels. The type was generally known by the name Hudson in North America, although the name Baltic was also used. The New York Central was the largest user of 4-6-4 locomotives in North America; they were also extensively used by the Milwaukee Road and the Canadian Pacific.
