First time in Canada, the Olympics enter a new era. All of a sudden, the hard rules on amateurism are loosened up, and several earlier banned athletes are welcome to the games.

Yvonne Van Gennip of Holland won three gold medals in speed skating. Katarina Witt of East Germany won her second straight gold in figure skating, and Alberto Tomba won his first two gold medals in the ski slope .
