How HTML Works

HTML is a set of tags that tell a Web browser how to display text. Tags mostly come in pairs of opening and closing tags, like <em> and </em>. Any text surrounded by a pair of tags is displayed the way the tags tell your browser to display it. E2's built-in HTML toolbar is designed to insert common tags for you at the press of a button. The basic tags and examples of their effects are shown below.

At the most basic level the usergroups allow an individual member of E2 to send identical messages to a number of other E2 members. It works as you might expect. When you send a message to the usergroup, it gets forwarded to all members of the group.

There are around seventy active usergroups available on E2 - you can find a list at Usergroup Lineup. Each caters to a group of members who have something in common. The common factor ranges from interests such as movies or role-playing games, to geographical location. In practice, usergroups can be set up for any reasonable purpose.

Some usergroups are pretty much part of the E2 scenery; others are temporary, serving only as a common point of reference for a few weeks. Some have only a few members, others have hundreds.

Why should I be interested?

More for fun than profit. E2 is a diverse community, and can be a bit overwhelming. The usergroups can help members to make…

Theme Nirvana lists Zen Stylesheets by popularity, with an option to switch to the Zen theme if it is not already enabled.

You can click "preview this style" to preview a stylesheet but for a better idea of how it looks in action, you should click "Use this stylesheet" and try out a variety of pages on E2 proper:

If you know cascading style sheets, you can use the Style Defacer to add any CSS declarations you like. These declarations will be applied after the main stylesheet and will be visible to you only, nobody else.

In late 1999, shortly after Everything2 came online, the content of the Project Gutenberg edition of the 1913 Webster's Unabridged Dictionary were imported into Everything2. Webster 1913 is used to refer both to this dictionary and the bot which was used to node these entries.

You can't do an Everything User Search on Webster 1913. He has over 100,000 writeups; the database strain would be too great.

Webster 1913 writeups always appear last in a given node. (Ordinarily, writeups appear in order of creation.)

Webster 1913 writeups cannot be voted on, though they can be C!ed.
