What has happened since my last set of writings? I've given up my virginity to a hooker, so I don't have to worry about sex. I know I can do better, but I don't need to.

I'm in the Delayed Enlistment Program with the United States Air Force. I've been working out in the neighborhood and maintaining contact with the city's cabaret community. I saw Mary Cleere Haran last week and her response to my Air Force plans was "I've never had a boyfriend in the Air Force."

My plans for an Air Force broadcaster job requires an audition tape recording at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey. The audition was tough on my voice and tongue, but the recording process was even tougher. I had to make sure the recorder was recording to the recordable surface of the tape! The recruiter (TSgt Maurice Brooks from Brooklyn) didn't mind the time taken but he had a tough time getting back to the New Jersey Turnpike.

I have to get away from staying at home this year. Back in the day I thought of…

I was leaving my mom, and armed with my camera I was ready to take pictures in a club. Jump from home to the city.

The lighting was warm inside and most of the colors are red, so I knew I had to push the film good. However, I can't read the film settings, and the batteries are shot! Nonetheless, I schmoozed with the people - most of them I know. Everybody looked like they're dressed in shades of red. I passed by Quinn Lemley, the Rita Hayworth impersonator - pretty nice woman, but I had more people to meet. I walked downstairs to meet Mary Cleere Haran, one of my favorite singers. I kissed her hello, but that wasn't enough. I kissed her on the lips, and they were inexplicably pink. I kissed her more.. and I tried to slip her the tongue, but I didn't. She turned away to make out with some other guy - a white guy, older than me. She was wearing a satin cream-colored gown, and the shine was cut through by the man's tuxedo as he wrapped his left arm around Mary. I knew I had to go. I didn't even take a picture.

Deep in the heart of Chelsea I was stuffing and stamping envelopes for Gregory, a graphic designer preparing his upcoming belated birthday party out in New York's Restaurant Row. I was mailing out his invitations to everybody I know in the New York City Cabaret Scene. Granted the Friday afternoon radio was pumping nothing but news about the war in Iraq, silence was not an option in the office. I did this since a few days ago, and I've gotten the process to a science - return address stamped, recipient addresses written and envelope sealed. Since I was quite focued on the mailing work, I didn't talk very much. Okay, I did tell him how I like his neighbor - a nice Italian girl living upstairs from Greg's office. We met in Judy's Chelsea a few weeks ago after seeing a show with Greg - his boyfriend was the headliner.

The Double Whammy

The dance club hosting the birthday party had its license revoked. The Fire Department was messing with the local cabarets, especially…

I've taken a traveller to see life through my eyes - in this case, it's a night out to see Mary Cleere Haran and a small chunk of the New York Cabaret Scene.

I volunteered to be a guide for the local Youth Hostel for a few of the cabarets and performers I know in New York City. March is a great month since most of my favorite singers are doing shows out in full force - especially some of the folks from my Chicago trip years ago.

Here I am, strapped with my camera, film and a tripod. I knew I don't have to use everything, but I had to be equipped. Only one hostel guest made it. She was from Canada and Australia, rip-roaring to go see New York my way. I left directions for the laggards to the World Financial Center, and we were on our way downtown.

Tonight's show was in the World Financial Center - Mary was doing her show about lyrics and lyricists. That didn't throw me off guard because I saw the same thing (only scaled down to an hour) in the Ravinia Festival. I…

Last weekend, I arrived in Chicago in unkind terms. Actually, my throat was sore from the Greyhound bus air conditioner running at full blast, and I had only enough money for one-and-a-half days after the hostel and camera expenses.

However, I've managed to take a few photos of Davenport's Piano Bar and Cabaret and they should come out great. Singer Tom Michael was the best of the show with his friends Cory Jamison and Joan Curto doing a tribute to Richard Rodgers - a little of both his collaborations with Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II.

The highlight of the weekend was my photographing Mary Cleere Haran in the Ravinia Festival - all I had to do is ask the public relations dept., and I got in with my camera, tripod and winter coat (to keep things quiet). Since I had one roll of Tri-X to kill for the first few minutes of the performance, I took pictures…

Chasing the Siren Song - Day 3

I visited Girlface and MartianBob in the afternoon in Iowa City. I had lunch and dinner courtesy of Girlface, and she got to hang out with her friends from downtown. Organic food and beer is everywhere, but so are the sorority girls.

I've never seen a college town so integrated with the populace before, let alone any college town in the United States.

As a warning to all bus travelers - get a coat. The air conditioning sometimes have the tendency to go full blast, and it's pretty much ravaging my throat. I nearly coughed my lungs out!
